Boyce Bush

Boyce Ansel Bush, 95, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Upstate Community Hospice House. Born May 30, 1926 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Eunice Floyd and Ann Zora Mason Bush and the husband of the late Betty Larke Hipp Bush.

A retired architect. A graduate of Spartanburg High School. A US Army veteran, Mr. Bush was drafted in WWII, where he served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and rose to the rank of Staff Sargent. He returned to Spartanburg after his service and attended Wofford College.

Ansel had his own construction company, Ansel Bush Construction where he designed and built many single-family homes in the Spartanburg area and in Lincolnton, North Carolina while then working for Seth Lumber Company. His company also did commercial building design as well as designing several church additions in this area.

He worked for Lockwood, Greene & Co., an Architectural and Engineering firm for over 25 years. After retiring, he continued to work for a time for Lockwood Greene on various architectural projects, in locations such as Seattle/Tacoma, Washington and Oak Ridge, Tenn. He then worked privately as an architect on several projects such as churches and commercial projects of different sizes.

Ansel loved sports and even played for a semi-pro football team in Spartanburg right after the war. He was very creative and was always looking for ways to make things better.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth “Libby” Bush Smith (Scott) of Spartanburg, SC, Audrey Lynn Bush of Spartanburg, SC, B.A. “Buddy” Bush (Sissy) of Spartanburg, SC, and Carol Bush Semo (Marty Temple), of Seneca Falls, NY; his grandchildren, Christian Smith, Matt Smith, Alex Smith, Stephanie Bush Chastain, Christine Bush, Haley Bush Dill, Catherine Temple Simmons, Bradley Temple, Jessica S. Crook; great-grandchildren, Leslie Hileski, Taylor Smith, Titus Smith, Ramsey Larke Chastain, Trotter Chastain, Darby Dill, Cy Ansel Dill, Pepper Simmons, Safia Crook, Davina Crook, Charlotte Temple, Peter Temple; great-great grandchild, Carter Hileski. Along with his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his sisters, Gladys Camp, Meredith Bundrick, and Annie Maude Bullington.

Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, January 9, 2022  in the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Brad Gray and The Rev. Megan Gray. Private burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
