B. Nelson Smith

B. Nelson Smith, 79, of Spartanburg, SC died Thursday, February 3, 2022 at SRMC-Mary Black Campus. Born September 6, 1942 in Albemarle, NC, he was the son of the late George Washington and Mary Catherine Russell Smith.

A US Army veteran, Mr. Smith was retired from the Milliken family. Nelson was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a member of USTA SC Tennis Association, where he held multiple positions.

Nelson loved life and spending time talking with any of his friends His nightly golf cart rides with Johnette was his way of checking on his neighbors. His love for golf and tennis was also a way he could spend time socializing. The best role model to his entire family, his favorite role was being “Papa.”

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Johnette Ruth Cobb Smith, his sons, Barry Nelson Smith, Jr. and Russell John Smith of Spartanburg, SC; his daughter, Annissa Smith Wright (Jim) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Mary Catherine Wright, Clay Wright, and Grace Ann Wright, all of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Vivian Lowder (Hoyt) of Tampa, FL; and numerous family and friends. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Jamey Wright, and two sisters, Doris Outen and Eleanor Smith.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date.
