Billy Sunday Painter, 86, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born December 27, 1923, in Cowpens, SC, he was the son of the late John Claude Painter, Sr. and Lola Garrett Painter. Mr. Painter was known for his musical skills, his radio program with the "Shorty Painter Band" in the 1940's, and his career with Kanawha Life Insurance. He was once a member of the Renfro Valley Players. Mr. Painter is survived by his wife, Pat, of the home. Also surviving is his daughter, Janet Willis of Virginia; two sisters, Mary Langston of Dallas, GA, and Becky Hall of Zimmerman, MN; grandchildren, Scott McBee, Rhoda, Billy J. Painter, Bret Painter, and Brandy Painter; nieces and nephews, Elaine Tate, Marlene Bishop, Pam Wolfe, Tommy Painter, and David Harmon, Jr.; and several great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his son, George Painter; step-mother, Elizabeth Painter; sisters, Mabel Harmon, Frances Raines, and Isabel Painter; and brothers, John Painter, Jr., Ben Painter, and Floyd Painter. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Luther H. Rickenbaker III and the Rev. C. Allen Senn. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to give to the Building Fund of Central United Methodist Church, 233 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
