Billy Harold Marley, age 88, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after a battle with cancer. He was born July 29, 1935 in Swepsonville, NC to the late E. W. Marley and Geneva Ross Strassner. Bill was the devoted husband of Nancy C. Marley for 69 years.
Bill and Nancy were high school sweethearts. They met at Spartanburg High School, where Bill graduated in 1953. The lovebirds wed in 1953, shortly before Bill joined the Air Force. They traveled around the world, including many places in the US, Hawaii, London, and Thule, Greenland.
A career military man, Bill proudly served the country he loved for 20 years with the Air Force. During his time in the service, he earned many Air Force medals including a Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Longevity Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. He also received the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Bill was very patriotic and served in Operation Linebacker II in December 1972.
Bill was an avid South Carolina Gamecocks, Boston Red Sox, and Washington Redskins fan. He was a devoted member of Morningside Baptist Church and attended Acts Sunday School Class for many years. However, his greatest love and joy was his family.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy C. Marley; son, David Marley (Tracy) of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughter, Linda Morris (Charlie) of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Matthew (Christina) of Columbia, Jonathan (Brigetta) of Greenville, Caroline of Spartanburg, Camryn of Columbia, Kyle of Rock Hill, Ross (Liza) of Mount Pleasant, and Jordan of Virgina Beach, VA; great-grandchildren, Al and Aryn of Spartanburg and Griffin and Porter of Mount Pleasant; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Along with his parents, Bill was predeceased by a great-grandson, Ross Marley, Jr.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am in the chapel, conducted by Dr. Steven Owensby. Interment with Military Honors by American Legion Post 28 will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
