Bill Smith

Bill Homer Smith, 80, of 550 Coopertown Road, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 12, 2010, at his home. He was the son of the late Okie and Virginia Smith. He was a retired Independent Owner-Operator (Truck Driver) and a proud member of the American Legion, Post 28 and VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), Post 9539 of Spartanburg. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War, 1st Calvary, 82nd First Artillery Battalion and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Dove Assembly of Spartanburg. Surviving along with his wife of 49 years, Oleva "Kathy" Smith, who were married in Columbus, Ohio, on October 14, 1961, is a daughter, Kathy Tomsic and her husband Mark; a son, Bill Andrew Smith of Spartanburg; a brother, Ray Smith and his wife Sally; two sisters, Juanita Craft and Ruth Jean Herzberger of Kissimmee, FL; a sister, Sandy Messer and her husband George of Dothan, AL; sister-in-laws, Mary Gibson of Spartanburg, and Jody Wilson and her husband Dewayne of Weott, CA; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and his beloved pets, Rosie and Dixie. Along with his mother and father, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Helen Marie Saunders; a sister, Savannah Stapleton; and a brother, Arthur Smith. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 ,at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Joe Mosley. Burial with military rites provided by American Legion Post 28 will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home.
