Betty Zimmerman

February 6, 1932 — May 30, 2015

Betty Zimmerman, 83, departed this earth on Saturday, May 30, 2015. Her spirit was immediately transported by the power of God into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved and was loved by a host of family and friends. Betty was the daughter of the late George R. Jernigan and Ethel "Mimi" Jernigan. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three siblings, George R. "Bob" Jernigan, Jr. (Dot), Howard P. Jernigan (Gloria), and Walter M. Jernigan (Sheila). All five of her brothers served in the Armed Services. Betty was devoted to studying the Bible and enjoyed teaching God's word. She also loved the beauty of nature, especially flowers and for many years she belonged to the Cherry Laurel Garden Club, serving two or more years as its president. She took great pleasure in playing bridge, playing tennis, chauffeuring her many friends to various activities, and sewing for her children when they were young. Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, James "Ed" Zimmerman; their three children, Mitzi Bessent (Brad), Jim (Theresa), Cindy Stabell (Bob). Also surviving are her sister, Ethel "Sister"Galloway, brothers Charles J. Jernigan (Nancy) of Piedmont and Lewis F. Jernigan (Sally) of Seneca. Grandchildren include Meghan Billings, Joseph Hill, David Hill, Emory Zimmerman, Sarah Bradley Bessent, Jennifer Bagnal, Jessica Major, Julianna King, Jennifer Stabell, Jon Stabell, and Allison Stabell. There will be a memorial service at Morningside Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Following the service, the family will greet friends in the Welcome Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29301; or to Journey Hospice, 665 North Academy Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
