Betty Ruth DuPre Toney

Betty Ruth DuPre Toney, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, October 28, 2024, at Rosecrest Community Residential Care, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born on October 19, 1928, in Pacolet, SC, a daughter of the late Jessie Harvey DuPre and Lindsay James DuPre. She was married to her childhood sweetheart, James Edward “Ping” Toney for 69 glorious years. 

Betty was a graduate of Pacolet High School and attended Robinson’s Business College. She was employed for a short while, but she delighted in being a homemaker and serving her family and her Lord. She was a longtime faithful member of First Baptist Church-Spartanburg and the Al Martin Sunday School Class where she served as social secretary and enjoyed many long-lasting friendships. 

Surviving are her sons, Barry E. Toney (Jenny) of Spartanburg and James Daryl Toney of Warm Springs, GA; her three grandchildren, Brad Toney (Kelly), Amelia Holt, and Julia Barnstead, (Scott); her 9 great-grandchildren, David Shortell (Claire), Mia Lorenz, Matthew Lorenz (Rachel), Alexis Lorenz (Nick), Alex Johnson, Emma Barnstead, Lucas Barnstead, Cameron Toney, and Taylor Toney; and numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Along with her husband and her parents, Betty was predeceased by her brother, Lindsay R. DuPre and her sister, Billie Doris DuPre. 

A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Sal Barone and the Rev. Brian Redding. The family will receive friends following the service at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. 

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Rosecrest and the awesome caregivers with Spartanburg Regional Hospice for the gentle and loving care shown to Betty. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ALIGHT, c/o First Baptist Church-Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
