Betty Sue Brown Gentry, beloved wife, devoted mother, and cherished grandmother, passed away on March 12, 2025, at the age of 79 in Spartanburg, SC. Born on May 27, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, Betty was the daughter of the late James Cantrell Brown and Mattie Lee Cope Brown.
After earning her undergraduate degree from Tennessee Tech, Betty served as a home demonstration agent in Tennessee, imparting valuable knowledge and skills to those around her.
Once Mike and Mark started school, she began her education career by earning her master's degree from Converse College, which laid the foundation for her impactful career in education as she dedicated 30 years of her life to District 3.
Betty's personal life was filled with joy and the warmth of family. She shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Harold Lee Gentry. Together, they created a loving home in which family was always the centerpiece. Betty was known for her incredible support of those she loved, often gathering everyone around the table to share delicious meals that displayed her cooking skills. Her commitment to her family was evident in all that she did, from attending every game played and coached by her husband and sons to fostering an environment of togetherness.
Betty is survived by her husband, Harold; her sons, Michael Gentry (Sheila) and Mark Gentry (Rebecca), all of Inman, SC; and her treasured grandchildren, Cooper Gentry (Ragan Ashmore), Kirby Gentry, Cathryn Gentry, Mark Edward Gentry, and David Lee Gentry. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a deep commitment to family that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Betty's family invites friends to come and share their memories of a truly remarkable woman who touched so many lives. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Sunday, March 16, 2025, Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E Main St, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
Remembrances can be made to the Spartanburg County Foundation’s District 3 Children’s Relief Fund; a fund designed to help children and families within District 3 where Betty donated so much of her time, energies, and love.
