Betty Roper Strother, wife of Rev. Robert Garfield Strother, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 84 on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. The couple had been married for nearly 62 years. Betty was the daughter of the late Nannie Sexton Roper and Kelus Palmer Roper. A native of Spartanburg, Betty was born on January 4, 1929. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Winthrop College. She also did graduate work at Converse College and Wofford College and taught school for 23 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Jane Strother Petty (George) of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Melissa Lunsford and Michael Driggers; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Lunsford; and a sister, Carolyn "Bobbie" Roper Gibson (Ray) of Morrow, GA. She is predeceased by a brother, Douglas Palmer Roper. The family will receive friends 1:00-2:30 PM Sunday, March 17, at Bethel United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church with the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. David B. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
