Betty Thirft Gilliam, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at the age of 90 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Born on May 31, 1934, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late James Thrift and Corrie Geddes Thrift,
Betty dedicated over 40 years of her life to serving as a postmaster, first in Arcadia and later in Fairforest, where she became a cherished member of the community.
Betty was known for her cheerful personality and her warm, welcoming nature. She embodied the true spirit of hospitality and a gifted cook, she delighted family and friends with her culinary skills. Betty had a remarkable ability to open her home to everyone. Her independence and spirited personality were evident in all aspects of her life, inspiring those around her.
As an avid supporter of the Carolina Gamecocks, Betty enjoyed the thrill of sports. She found joy in the outdoors, particularly while observing hummingbirds. and had a passion for reading. Betty also loved to explore the world, cherishing her international travels which enriched her life experiences.
Betty leaves behind her daughter, Lynn Smith of Inman, along with her grandchildren, Duane Smith (Monica) of Moore and Christopher Smith (Nicole) of Inman. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Michaela Smith and Oliver Smith, as well as extended family who will deeply miss her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Page Gilliam, her parents, and her beloved sisters, Julia Lawrence and Margaret Burnett.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel to be conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Pearson. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Betty, the family requests memorials be made to the Scottish Rite Foundation of South Carolina, Inc., 7230 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
Betty Thrift Gilliam’s legacy of kindness, warmth, and spirited independence will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
