Betty Cheek

Betty Ruth Jones Cheek, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at White Oak North Grove-Spartanburg, SC. Born October 23, 1932, in Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Lee Jones and Annie Viola Lee Jones and widow of Furman Cheek. Mrs. Cheek began her working career at age 16 in the Dry Cleaning Industry, working for Fowler Cleaners in Pelham, One-Hour Martinizing, and Thomas & Sons. She retired from the YMCA as a Certified Masseuse and manager of the Women's Health Club. She was also a devoted friend and employee of Karen and Gordon Floyd. Mrs. Cheek began her journey with the Lord at Mayfield Chapel Baptist Church in Duncan, SC at an early age. Later in life, she became a member of Arch Street AME Zion Church in Spartanburg, SC. Betty was a very faithful member serving with the Trustee Board, Stewardess Board, Sanctuary Choir, Finance Committee, and Pastor's Steward. She was also a past-president of The Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society of the AME Zion Church. Survivors include her daughter, Janice Denise Pearson of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Tara Denise Martin of Taylors, SC, Eshante Sierra Floyd and Jalen Serena Pearson, both of Spartanburg, SC, and Andre Martin of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren, Tyrell, Carrington, and Shamar Jones; sisters, Margie Jones and Doris Jones, both of Greenville, SC; and brother, James Jones of Greenville, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by eight brothers and four sisters. Visitation will be 12:30-1:00 PM Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Albert L.
