Bertha Mcarthur

August 6, 1916 — May 14, 2010

Bertha Ezell McArthur, 93, of Spartanburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 14, 2010, at her home. Born August 6, 1916, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Walter Orlando and Nora Pettit Ezell. She is survived by her beloved husband of 74 years, Emmett Lyle McArthur. Bertha worked alongside her husband, Emmett, for many years at their business, McArthur Shoe Clinic. One of her favorite hobbies was attending her ceramic group each week. She gave all the family so many great ceramic pieces. She and Emmett were active members in the local and national Garden Clubs of America. Bertha had such a love for flowers, and that was probably because of her dad, W. O. Ezell, who was responsible for helping to beautify Spartanburg with flower beds on every spare piece of ground he could find. The First Baptist Church of Spartanburg was a very important part of her life. She was faithful to her Sunday School Class where she served as president for many years, and loved going to the senior group, Young at Heart, and taking many fun trips with them. She had a heart for missions and was involved with the WMU group. One of the things everyone remembers about Bertha are the many, many cards and notes she sent on your birthday, Christmas, and just to let you know she was thinking about you. If anyone was sick, in the hospital or nursing home, Bertha was ALWAYS there with them. Her favorite thing was to make boiled custard, put it in a jar, and take it to whoever was not feeling well. Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Sylvia McArthur Anderson and son-in-law Raymond Anderson of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Gary Anderson, wife Paula, and children Mattie and Moriah of Huntersville, NC, Gaye Anderson Goad, husband Tim, and children Blake and BreAnn of Celebration, FL; Scott Anderson, wife Cindy, and children Carly, Landon, and Spencer of Charlotte, NC; her sister, Joyce Ezell Kidd and her husband Benny of Birmingham, AL; and a number of very special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Cecil Ezell, Earl Ezell, and Frank Ezell; and sister, Margaret Ezell Wells. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Monday, May 17, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Greg Dry and the Rev. Keith Phillips. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Special thanks is extended to the Piedmont Hospice staff that were so wonderful the last months of her life. We were blessed also with great caregivers: Donna Mears, April Edwards, Dianne Roberts, and Lucille Ross. We are deeply indebted to them for their loving, caring hearts toward Emmett and Bertha. Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be made to the WMU of First Baptist Church, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or to Piedmont Hospice, 106 Metro Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303 Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Bertha Ezell McArthur please visit our Sympathy Store.
