Berta Rath

July 9, 1941 — September 27, 2014

Berta Bettig Rath, 73, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at her home. Born July 9, 1941, in Erzhuebel, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Friedrich and Berta Poppke Bettig. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Werner Alred Rath. Mrs. Rath was a member of Phillips Lutheran Church in Allentown, PA and a member of Delaware Saengerbund. Mrs. Rath was most happy caring for her husband and family. She loved to cook, bake, and feed everyone and loved spending time with family and friends. Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. Berta was quite the adventurer and has lived in many places besides her homeland of Germany. While living in Delaware, she worked as a waitress for Iron Hill Restaurant of Newark, DE and also for General Motors, Wilmington, DE for a short time. Berta then had a daycare in her home where she enjoyed caring for some of her grandchildren and the children of friends. Upon retiring with her husband to Florida, she enjoyed having family and friends visit and spending time at the beach. She also enjoyed living in Maryland, the Poconos, Pennsylvania, and finally, South Carolina. Berta will always be remembered by many as kind and generous and "so sweet", always thinking of the needs of others first and foremost, and enjoying life to the fullest. In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Connie Sadler (Allen) of Boiling Springs, SC and Linda Hipple (Greg) of Colora, MD; a son, Werner Rath Jr. (Vicki) of North East, MD; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Otto Bettig of Germany. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Ave. Ste. 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
