Bernice Simms

Bernice Dolores McLeod Johnston Simms, 87, of Greenville, died Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born, July 14, 1923, in Jacksonville, FL, she was the daughter of the late Ozzie Dewitt and Leone Moss McLeod. Bernice graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL. She spent much of her time as a secretary-clerk in Camp Blanding, FL with the Federal Government. Later, she had her own business as a public stenographer with her name listed in the yellow pages. At the age of 8, God touched her life and saved her at Marietta Baptist Church on September 12, 1931. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Inman. She is survived by her devoted husband, Pafford J. Simms, Sr., whom she married in 1964; three step-children, Diane Barrett, Pafford Simms, Jr., Janine Phillips, and their children. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Keith and Shannon Johnston, sons of Jeff and Tammy Johnston, Sheryll White, and Tonya Spencer, children of Mitchel Johnston and their children. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Faye Lloyd; two brothers, Larry and Donald McLeod, and their children. She was predeceased by her three sons, Mitchel Johnston, David Johnston, and Jeffery Keith Johnston; and one brother, Gerald M. McLeod. Visitation will be 1:45-2:45 PM Sunday, May 15, 2011 At Floyd's Boiling Springs Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Duncan, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, 980 Bishop Road, Inman, SC 29349.
