Bernice Potter

October 24, 1914 — February 25, 2017

Bernice Martin Potter (lovingly known as "Boo" to family and close friends), 102, of Cowpens, SC, died Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Summit Hills, Spartanburg, SC. Born October 24, 1914, in Pacolet Mills, SC, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Laura Martin and was married to the late Woodrow W. Potter for 65 years. She was one of three sisters, Ethel Allen of Concord, NC, and the late Thelma Martin. Mrs. Potter taught at Cowpens High School and Evans Junior High where she had a profound influence on her students in her chemistry and science classes. She also volunteered at the SC Mental Health Association and was a Board member of the SC United Methodist Women, as well as a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church in Cowpens. A 1931 graduate of Winthrop College, she received her BS in Home Economics, was a founding member of the Cowpens Garden Club, an avid reader, puzzle enthusiast, and loved to engage others in important social issues. Boo will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends, including those who cared dearly for her during her years at Summit Hills and Dr. Colin Curran at the Gibbs Cancer Center and Spartanburg Regional Hospice. The family wishes to thank them warmly for their kindnesses and devotion. In addition to her sister, she is survived by her daughter, Terry P. Roof and son-in-law, Wade Clark Roof of Santa Barbara, CA; two grandchildren, Christopher Potter and his wife Kym Potter and Katherine Brandts and her husband Michael Brandts; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece, Paula Gray of Concord, NC. She was predeceased by a son, Ned Potter who was married to Shirley Potter; and by a granddaughter, Jennifer Roof Guilford who was married to Zeke Guilford of Miami, FL. A cryptside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, March 3, 2017 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, with the Rev. John Culp officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Home Care & Hospice, PO Box 430, Drayton, SC 29333.
