Bernard Fred Donnerstag, 74, of Boiling Springs, SC, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born February 25, 1937 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Karl and Esther Hoffman Donnerstag. He is survived by his wife Linda Burgess Sawyer Donnerstag. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Bernie was also a former machine operator in the paper industry, worked for American Security Company for a number of years, a member of the Woodmen of the World organization, and attended Fairview Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Bernard F. Donnerstag, Jr. and wife Shirley of Hewitt, TX; four daughters, Lenore Donnerstag Sammis and husband Eddie of Barefoot Bay, FL, Jackie Donnerstag DeFalco and husband Joe of Holbrook, NY, Lisa Donnerstag Columbia and husband Tom of West Babylon, NY, Ruthann Donnerstag Kreiner and husband John of Lititz, PA; two step-daughters, Kimberly Sawyer Gray and husband Jimmy of Boiling Springs, SC, and Tommie Sawyer Anthony and husband Bobby of Gaffney, SC; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Butler of Greenville, SC. Visitation will be 1:00-2:45 PM Friday, March 11, 2011 at Fairview Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services, with military rites, will follow at 3:00 PM at the church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Memorials may be made to Fairview Free Will Baptist Church or Fairview Free Will Christian Academy, 2058 Chesnee Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303 The family will be at the home.
