Benjamin Goodwin

Benjamin S. Goodwin, 93, of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at White Oak Estates. Born September 14, 1916, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Ben Futral and Mary Teresa Lee Goodwin. He was first married to the late Clementine Schmitt Goodwin and then to Mozelle P. Goodwin. A 1939 graduate of Georgia Tech and also Army Command and General Staff College, he was a retired Colonel and Technical Director of Test and Evaluation Command in the U.S. Army, having worked as a mechanical engineer. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class, Association of the U.S. Army, Retired Officer's Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Legion, National Defense Industrial Association, and Georgia Tech Alumni Association. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Lynne Daniels of Pittsford, NY, and Virginia Lee Briggs of Winnsboro, TX; three grandsons, Scott Daniels of Concord, NH, Ethan Daniels of Oakland, CA, and Christopher Shafer of Winston-Salem, NC; two great-grandsons, Christopher John Shafer, and Benjamin Douglas Daniels; and two great-granddaughters, Jasmine Daniels and Natalie Daniels. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
