Barbara Baxley Strickler, 72, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born August 9, 1940, in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of the late Clarence S. and Dorothy Elizabeth Rollins Baxley, and widow of James Howard Strickler. Mrs. Strickler was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for 46 years, the Elsie Greer Circle for 45 years, a choir member for many years, and was involved in various church activities. She was also involved with numerous bridge clubs, lunch bunch every Wednesday, was a Board member of the Bethlehem Center for a number of years, a member of the Clemson IPTAY Club for many years, and was a football fanatic. Barbara was the 1988 National Delegate to the Republican National Convention, past vice chairman of the Spartanburg County Republican Party, past State Committeeman for the Spartanburg County Republican Party, delegate to County and State Republican Conventions for over 30 years, an active member of Spartanburg County Republican Women and First Monday, and the Spartanburg County Election Commission for 15 years, serving as chairman for many of those years. Barbara was most proud of her Election Commission service, she saw this as her most important role. Her favorite thing to do was to sit on the beach and put her feet in the ocean. The love of her life was Jim Strickler whom she met on Folly Beach where he was a lifeguard. Surviving are her children, Patricia "Patti" Strickler Barber (Tom) of Woodruff, SC, Col. (Ret.) James Howard "Jay" Strickler Jr. (Pam), and Craig Arthur Strickler, all of Beavercreek, OH; grandchildren, Andrew Thomas Barber (Jessica) of St. Louis, MO, Aaron Baxley Barber of Spartanburg, SC, Lindsey Nicole Strickler of Denver, CO, and Paul Daniel Strickler of Beavercreek, OH; and brother, David Baxley (Jan) of Greer, SC. Visitation will be 9:45-10:45 AM Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Poston Hall at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Frank E. Lybrand. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
