Barbara Lee

January 19, 1922 — April 13, 2015

Barbara Brown Lee, 93, of Spartanburg, SC, peacefully passed into eternal life on Monday, April 13, 2015 at her Summit Hills residence in Spartanburg, SC, surrounded by her loving family. Born January 19, 1922, she was the daughter of John Hertz Brown and Kathleen Sanders Brown of Spartanburg, SC. She attended Pine Street Elementary School, Spartanburg High School and was a 1943 graduate of Converse College. In August, 1946 she wed Charles Dixon Lee, Jr. After several moves in the Carolinas, they settled in Charlotte, NC in 1951 where they raised their family. In 2008 she returned to Spartanburg to be closer to family and friends. For 55 years she was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church of Charlotte, NC and most recently was a member of First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg. She was active in the life and ministry of MPUMC, where she was instrumental in establishing and supporting the Stephens Ministry program that continues to thrive today; and she was a member of the Luther Snyder Sunday School Class. Barbara lived a life of poise and grace as a warm, compassionate, nurturing, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. By every measure, she was wholly devoted to her husband, their five sons, and their respective families. Her abiding faith in God and Christian values were the central pillars on which she lived her daily life and built her relationships with family and friends. She taught through example how to live a purposeful and faithful life. To her family, she was a mainstay in times of rough weather and always a beacon of love and hope. In addition to being an active member of the Junior League of Charlotte, Barbara served multiple tours as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and was a docent with the Mint Museum. She was a member of the Cranford Book Club of Charlotte. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Charles Dixon Lee, Jr; a son John Hertz Lee; and her sister Kathleen Brown White. She is survived by sons C. Dixon Lee, III (Julie) of Columbia, SC; Keith Lee (Robin) of Inman, SC; Scott Lee (Kim) of Rock Hill, SC; Sanders Lee (Meg) of Spartanburg, SC; daughter-in-law Cyndi Lee of Charlotte, NC; 12 grandchildren, Charles, Christina (Robbie Stubbs), Adam (Melissa and sons Justin and Gavin), Roy, Katie, Branson (Jackie), Kathleen, Jordan (Sara Kate), Beth (Andrew McCord), Sanders (Meredith), Keith, and Barbara Caroline; and by two great-grandchildren, Viviene and Charles.
