Barbara Jean Brokaw Bylund, 85, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home from complications from cancer. Born September 1, 1930, in White Plains, NY, she was the daughter of the late Donald James Brokaw and Jean Sherman Brokaw and widow of Dr. Don Marvin Bylund. Barbara graduated from White Plains High School and attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg where she served as an Elder, Adult Sunday School teacher, Circle Bible School leader, member of the Chancel Choir and was founder of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Other interest included the Thursday Study Club and French studies. Barbara's life was the product of her intense curiosity. Her life was an endless search for knowledge, especially theology. She took great joy in sharing this knowledge. An accomplished pianist, she even played a recital at Carnegie Hall in earlier years. When she and her husband lived in Japan, Barbara studied Japanese flower arranging which added to her lifelong interest in flowers. One of Barbara's gifts was her attention to small but important details of her church. To that end, she often visited others, delivered copies of the sermons to those who were homebound and in the prayer shawl ministry recognized the importance of the personal connection to the sick and the lonely. Survivors include her sons, David Spencer Bylund of Honolulu, HI and Philip Lee Bylund of San Francisco, CA; sister, Bonney Miller of Sarasota, FL; and many loving friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, September 28, 2015 in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans, the Rev. Ansley Page, and the Rev. J. Edward Morris. Visitation will follow in the church Parlor. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Keeseville, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Greenewald-Lucas Endowment Fund, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
