Augustus Waite Shoolbred, Jr. died on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Summit Hills in Spartanburg, SC. Born in Columbia, SC on December 29, 1926, he was the son of the late Augustus Waite Shoolbred, Sr. and the late Margaret Fowler Shoolbred. He was married to the late Mary Chesnut Britton Shoolbred. He was also predeceased by a brother, Richard Fowler Shoolbred. He is survived by six children, William (Bill) Augustus Shoolbred of Spartanburg, Margaret Louise Shoolbred of Columbia, Mary (Ann) Shoolbred Blackwell and her husband Fredrick of Travelers Rest, Mary (Marcy) Shoolbred Palmer and her husband Dr. John J. (Joe) Palmer, Sr. of Greenville, Frances (Fran) Shoolbred Bouknight and her husband Richard (Ricky) of Columbia, and Richard (Rick) Fowler Shoolbred, Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Anderson. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Michael William Shoolbred and wife Carrie, Adam Waite Shoolbred, Philip Webster Shoolbred and wife Chelsea, Melissa Ryan Palmer, John Joseph Palmer, Jr. and wife Samantha, Richard Wayne Bouknight, Jr., Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Bouknight, Lillie Margaret (Maggie) Blackwell, Alice Waite Blackwell, Jill Amalee Shoolbred, and Reed Fowler Shoolbred. Mr. Shoolbred was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a 1949 graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. He was employed by the SC Highway Department and in 1950 joined The Harwood Beebe Company of Consulting Engineers as a design engineer. He rose to become president of the company and when the company was sold to Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, became a senior vice president. A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and a long-time member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church of Spartanburg, Mr. Shoolbred also attended Holy Trinity Anglican Church while living in Greenville. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, The American Water Works Association, The Sertoma Club of Spartanburg, The National Society of Professional Engineers, The South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers, and the Spartanburg Chapter of SCSPE. He served a term as State president of the SCSPE and president of the Spartanburg Chapter. He received the State Engineer of the Year award in 1979. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 400 Dupre Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, next to his beloved wife, Mary. Pallbearers will be his son, Richard Shoolbred, and his grandsons, Michael, Adam, and Philip Shoolbred, Joseph Palmer, Richard Bouknight, and Reed Shoolbred.
