Anne Brookbanks Hill, died at home, on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Born November 30, 1946, in Charleston SC she was the daughter of the late Tommy and Viola Brookbanks. Ms. Hill retired in 2001 from the Charleston County Department of Social Services after more than 29 years of service. While during her tenure she was promoted to progressively responsible positions. Ms. Hill began her career as a caseworker and, at retirement, was serving as the Program Director for Medicaid services in Charleston, SC. She was responsible for eighty-five staff and twenty four programs. She directed a local initiative in Berkeley and Charleston counties to extend health insurance coverage to over 6,000 uninsured children. She oversaw the largest Medicaid office in the state. During her employment with the state, she participated in numerous statewide committees and task forces. In addition, Ms. Hill served as Project Director for the Covering Kids Initiative sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and participated in the foundation's national efforts to acquire health coverage for children in poverty. After her retirement, she continued her affiliations with the SC State Employees Association, serving on both the local and state boards. She was the association's Executive Committee chair. She was Coordinator of Legislative Activities for 15 counties in the lower portion of the state. She received numerous awards during her years of service, culminating in her selection as Charleston Chapter Outstanding State Employee and South Carolina Outstanding State Employee. Prior to joining the Department of Social Services, she served as a director of a Department of Defense Resource Laboratory in an overseas American school and taught English in Japan to Japanese Nationals. She was a graduate of Columbia College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Ms. Hill is survived by a daughter, Julie D. Bentley, two grandchildren, Baylus Lee Cobb and Brylie Ann Bentley, family friends Kevin and Liz Renneker all of Pacolet, SC; sister, Louise Bussey, nephew, Tom Bussey; 2 nieces Linda McDonald and Sandra Turner, a great nephew Tommy Bussey, a great niece Katie Butt and life long friends Marianne and Bill Grier and John and Diane Quinn all of Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held at McAlister-Smith Chapel at 2501 Bees Ferry Road in Charleston on Friday November 12, 2010 at 3:00 pm. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hollings Cancer Center, MUSC; Charleston Chapter of South Carolina State Employees Association; or Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
