Anna Mitchell

Anna S. Mitchell, 97, of Spartanburg, died Friday, May 6, 2011, at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC. Born September 8, 1913, in Belton, SC, she was a daughter of the late McDuffie and Mamie Gaines Singleton and widow of Ottis Fredrick Mitchell. She graduated in 1930 from Belton High School and in 1934 from Winthrop College where she was the recipient of a Johns Hopkins Fellowship, and did graduate work at Converse College, Wofford College, and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Mitchell taught school for 42 years, with 30 years at Chapman Elementary School and the remaining years at schools in Anderson County, SC and Rutherford County, NC. She was a member of the National, South Carolina, and Spartanburg County Retired Teachers Associations. She served as secretary and vice president of the Christian Women's Society. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Age Club and was chosen as the 2007 Senior Adult of the Year. Survivors include a son, Michael F. Mitchell of Spartanburg, and a sister, Mary Thompson of Anderson, SC. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Jason Lee. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 350 N. Blackstock Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301; or to a charity of one's choice.
