Martha Ann Thomas Allen, 84, died peacefully at home on Sunday, September 23, 2012, with her devoted family by her side. Born on December 14, 1927, in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Banks Benton Thomas Sr. and Ethel Viola Thomas. A loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ann will be remembered as a devoted Christian who shared an abundant faith through her actions and wisdom. After her husband's death in 2005, Mrs. Allen thrived for 7 additional years in great part to the constant in-home care by her oldest daughter Carolyn, as well as the many visits from family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's visits highlighted her days. She also enjoyed the companionship of her dog Gracie, her loyal bed buddy. Ann's life revolved around her family and friends. She created daily a home of serenity, peace, and joy. Her goodness touched lives in unexpected ways. With a keen sense of humor and a zest for living, she could turn a foul day into fair. Lives were enriched by merely being in her presence. Ann is survived by her three children, Carolyn M. Allen of Spartanburg, SC, Tommy Allen (Teresa) of Greer SC, and Jane Sams (Charlie) of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer Allen Harrison (Travis), Brock Allen, Josh Sams, and Emily Sams Gonzales (Brian); as well as eight great-grandchildren, Karsyn Harrison, Katelynne Harrison, Kaden Harrison, Presley Allen, Walker Sams, Ann MaKenzee Sams, Elise Gonzales, and Lila Gonzales. Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Lowell Allen. She was the last surviving sibling of nine; predeceased by her brothers and sisters Ruth Ammons, Mary Reaves, Faye Hopper, Rhett Thomas, Dorothy Martin, James Thomas, Banks Benton Jr., and Hattie Thomas. The family extends its sincerest gratitude to Ann's extended family of caregivers: Evita Gory and Cecilia Hawkins. Their constant care and devotion are immeasurable. Their sweet songs, laughter, warmth, and compassion added immense joy to her life. The family also extends their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for providing excellent support during their mother's illness. Visitation will be at 2:00-3:30 PM Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Sams and the Rev. Daniel Blackwell. Pallbearers are Brock Allen, Josh Sams, Travis Harrison, Brian Gonzales, Tommy Allen, and Charlie Sams.
