Ann Johnston

Anne Morrill Johnston, 75, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, October 8, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born March 11, 1934, in High Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late Fred Walter and Mildred N. Morrill and lived with her grandparents in Hertford, NC, before moving to the Panama Canal Zone for high school and college. She was married to the late Albert Sydney Johnston for 55 years and lived in California during his tour in the U.S. Navy. Mrs. Johnston was an active member of The Episcopal Church of The Advent for over 50 years where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, a member of the Altar Guild, Daughters of the King, Guild of St. Frances and St. Clair, a graduate of Education for Ministry, former Church secretary, and served on various committees of the Annual Bazaar. She served on many civic boards including AWARE, Consensus Project, one of the original founders of New Day Clubhouse where she served on the Board and various committees for over 15 years. She worked for the Spartanburg Development Association while it was experiencing great growth and loved to be with her family and friends, travel and knitting. Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Johnston Smith and her husband Jeff of Spartanburg; two sons, Keith Robert Johnston and his wife Jody of Spartanburg, and Scott Lester Johnston and his wife Melissa of Atlantic Beach, NC; seven grandchildren, Wesley Palmer, Caitlin Stokes, Chandler Johnston, Allen Johnston, Patrick Johnston, Sydney Smith, and Palmer Smith; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Debra Ann Johnston Palmer. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2009, at The Episcopal Church of the Advent conducted by the Rev. J. Edward Morris and the Rev. Susan Perrin. Entombment will be in the Church Pergola Columbarium. The family will receive friends following the services in the Church Parish and Community Life Center. Serving as Honorary Escort will be members of the Beyond Education for Ministry Group, Harry Shinn, Reggie Whitehurst, Sally Overcarsh, Gail McCormick, Carol Stephen, and Roy Ellis.
