Ann Hammond

Ann Goolsby Hammond, 86, of 1530 Barberry Lane and 316 Summit Hills, died peacefully on Sunday, March 14, 2010, surrounded by three generations who loved her. Born July 30, 1923, in Forsyth, GA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. R. Cullen Goolsby, Jr. and the widow of Mr. Arthur B. Hammond. Ann was raised in Macon, GA, graduated from Miller High School, attended Arlington Hall College in Arlington, VA, and met her future husband at a military ball in Macon at the onset of World War II. She and Art shared a happy loving marriage for over sixty years. After educating two sons, Ann became a volunteer at Mary Black Memorial Hospital for many years, putting in over 10,000 hours of service to others, primarily through the Same-Day Surgery Department. She was awarded the Shirley S. Golightly Volunteer of the Year Award for 1988-89 and was made a life member of the Mary Black Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 2008. Ann loved and served her Lord and her church, Bethel United Methodist, and all her friends in the Loyalty Sunday School Class. She was a woman of keen intelligence, sharp wit, compassionate character, and surprising energy. She was an expert bridge player, avid reader, and a crack solver of crossword puzzles (always in ink). Ann was an auxiliary member of MOAA, a member of Book Barters Book Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her son, Cullen Hammond, his wife Ellen, and her son Feodor Alexeev of Atlanta, GA; her son, Wesley Hammond and his wife Libba, grandson Lane Hammond and his wife Sara and their twin daughters Marian and Claire, and granddaughter, Becky Hammond, all of Spartanburg; and niece, Margaret Greer-Simmons and her husband Chris and his son Park of Charleston. She was predeceased by an older sister, Margaret "Boots" Greer. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in the Church Parlor at Bethel United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Church conducted by the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. David B. Smith. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.
