Ana Mendes

Ana Maria Francisca Fernandes Mendes, 96, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, February 3, 2014, at Magnolia Manor-Spartanburg. Born May 25, 1917, in Goa, India, she was the daughter of the late Francisco Manuel and Margarida Fernandes, and widow of C. Sebastian Mendes. Mrs. Mendes spent the majority of her life in Tanzania, East Africa raising her five children before moving to Spartanburg, SC to live with her daughter. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She was a loving mother to Mildred/Cedric Abreu, Tony/Ramona, the late Fernando "Ferdy"/Ingrid, Alvaro/Doreen, and Stella/Agnelo DeSouza; and doting grandma to Brendan/Kimi Abreu, Hazel Abreu, Alistair/Tricia Abreu, Nathan Mendes, Melissa Mendes, Jonathan Mendes, Eleanor Mendes, Ivan Mendes, Heather-Ann/Ross Romano, Nicole Mendes and Lionel DeSouza; and great-grandma to Ariel, Jessie, Bethany and Ayden Abreu. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 8, 2014, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 N. Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by The Reverend Timothy M. Gahan. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Visitation will follow at the graveside. The family is at their respective homes.
