Allen Hugh Mackenzie, age 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2025, with family at his side. His memory will be celebrated by his children David A. Mackenzie, Sarah M. Donnan (Andy), Clara M. Pelfrey (Scott) and William W. E. Mackenzie and all of his grandchildren.
Allen was born and grew up in Spartanburg, SC. He attended Pine Street School, Spartanburg High and Wofford College. He completed medical school at Tulane University and served in the Navy for 4 years as a physician. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine, he made a career as a Rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic (CC). He served as staff physician, teacher, lecturer, and leader in the CC Department of Rheumatology for 33 years. He was recognized as a “Distinguished Rheumatologist” by the American College of Rheumatology.
Allen retired to his hometown and settled in Roebuck where he supported the arts, the Tree Coalition, SPACE and Hatcher Gardens. He became a master gardener through Clemson. He had a lifelong interest in insects and spiders and created a large formal collection and taught many about insects of all kinds. He loved sharing his knowledge. He was very proud to donate his collection to the Biology Department at Wofford.
Allen valued family greatly and was especially glad to live near his sister, Susan Hopps (Alec) and his nephews Hearon McCravy (Stephanie), Scott McCravy (Joanne) and Allen McCravy (Cindy), as well as all their children.
He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Childs Mackenzie, and parents, W.L.G. and Mary F. Mackenzie of Spartanburg.
Funeral services will be held at St Matthew’s Episcopal Church (101 Matthews Lane, Spartanburg) on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 1 PM.
The family are very grateful to all the staff at RoseCrest Lutheran Homes for their considerate care of Allen over the last 3 years.
