Alice Hawkins

Mrs. Alice Jeanette Hawkins, 97, died Friday, January 9, 2015, in Loomis, California. Born June 21, 1917, in Fort Collins, Colorado, she was the daughter of the late Albert H. and Carolyn M. Cody Robinson. Jeanette was a 1935 graduate of Ft. Collins High School (Colorado) and graduated in 1939 with a BS in Horticulture from Colorado A&M, now Colorado State University. She subsequently received both a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Horticulture from The Ohio State University in 1941. It was at Ohio State University where she met her future husband. Prior to marrying the late Col. Boyce V. Hawkins (Army Ret.) in 1949, Jeanette worked as a school teacher; in the seed lab on the Guayule rubber project in Salinas, California doing critical war time research; at Cutter Laboratories - Penicillin Department, Berkeley, California; and as a laboratory assistant to Dr. Charles Rick and Dr. Louis Mann in the Olericulture Department at UC Davis doing research on tomatoes and other vegetables. Jeanette married Col. Boyce V. Hawkins (Army Ret.) on October 1, 1949. She traveled the world with him during his Army career, including stays in Japan, Ethiopia, and Germany, as well as many locations in the United States. They moved to Spartanburg in 1968 upon Boyce's retirement from the Army. Jeanette was a member of Fernwood Baptist Church and of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Survivors include two sons, Richard C. Hawkins and his wife Araminta of Loomis, CA, and Stephen C. Hawkins and his wife Shannon of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren, Jonathan R. Hawkins and his wife Adrienne of Culver City, CA, Jeanette Ines Carolyn Hawkins of Loomis, CA, Kyle A. Hawkins, Kane A. Hawkins, and Kegan A. Hawkins, all of Carmel, IN; and one great-grandchild, Jade Meschi Hawkins of Loomis, CA. Jeanette was predeceased by her loving husband, Boyce V. Hawkins. Visitation will be from 1:00-1:45 PM, Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Fernwood Baptist Church, Spartanburg, with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 PM at the church, conducted by the Rev. Stuart Jones. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
