Albert Manning Lynch, Sr. of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2022, having been surrounded by a flock of family including his children and grandchildren. Born July 7, 1929 in Mill Spring, NC, he grew up in Lancaster, SC. He was the son of the late Aiden Albert and Mary Isabel Moore Lynch.
A 1950 graduate of Wofford College, Al remained a passionate and involved supporter of the Terriers throughout his life. He was a Major in the United States Air Force and served in the Pacific during the Korean War. Following retirement from active duty, he served in the Air Force Reserves for 23 years.
His career as a home builder produced many fine homes across the state. He and Freda also built a business, Carolina Health Care Service, which included the development and operation of assisted living facilities in five locations. The Methodist Church was Al’s lifelong place of worship. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Al and his family were asked to help start another church, St. Paul United Methodist Church. As a founding member there, he heartily embraced Boy Scout Troop #114. He went on almost every camping trip and was honored with induction into The Order of the Arrow.
When he and Freda moved back to Spartanburg, they joined Trinity United Methodist Church, where they served faithfully. Hosting and entertaining friends and family (especially his grandchildren!) at their Fripp Island home and later at Wild Dunes brought Al and Freda great joy. They also loved traveling, cooking, and “a glass” (of wine).
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Freda Buff Lynch; his children, Albert Manning Lynch Jr. (Mary Speed), Amy Lynch Mullikin (Louie), Jason Lynch (Griffin), and daughter-in-law, Courtney Lynch. He also leaves behind his 10 highly entertaining grandchildren, William Mullikin (Megan), Andrew Mullikin (DeAnna), Bailey Moneyhun (John), Manning Callan (Dan), Mary Anna Thomas (Greg), Lucy Lynch, Wallace Lynch, Harriet Lynch, John Lynch, and Lilly Lynch; and his nine great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by the mother of Manning and Amy, Eleanor Ogburn Lynch.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. A reception will follow at the home of Jason and Griffin Lynch.
