Abby Kanipe

Abby Lee Johnson Kanipe, 91, of Southern Shops, SC, died Friday, January 6, 2017. Born June 2, 1925 in Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Rhett Martin and Audrey I. Johnson and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the widow of Jack J. Kanipe. Abby was the last surviving charter member of Gravely Memorial United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Survivors include her daughters, Jackie Kimbrell of Pauline; Karen Culbreth (Hugh) of Inman; grandsons, Rodney Kimbrell (Lanie); Mike Culbreth (Heather); Joseph Rhett Culbreth (Kim); granddaughters, Nikki Hoopingarner (Bobby); and Kalin Fox (Andrew); and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Sinclair Johnson; and sisters, Mary Willard; Betty Hawkins and Peggy Edwards. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Gravely Memorial United Methodist Church, 7400 Lone Oak Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29303, conducted by the Rev. Scott S. Gilmer. Burial will be in Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery, 1100 Old Hills Bridge Road, Pauline, SC 29374. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Gravely Memorial United Methodist Church, 7400 Lone Oak Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family will be at the home of Jackie Kimbrell.
