A. T. Stevens, 90, a resident of Rosecrest Retirement Center, Inman, SC, and formerly of Moore, SC, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Born February 8, 1919, in Halifax County, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Nora Price Stevens and the husband of the late Carol Shurburtt Stevens. Mr. Stevens served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 and fulfilled assignments in infantry, intelligence, and military police work. While serving at the former Camp Croft, he met his future wife Carol, then a resident of Spartanburg. They were married in January 1943. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Stevens began his career as a painting and coatings specialist. That career spanned some 40 years with Devoe Paint Company, Celanese Corporation, Daniel Construction Company, and Daniel Nuclear Division. He retired in 1985 but continued to do contract work with various coatings companies. After his retirement he and his wife moved to Moore where he resided until entering the RoseCrest Community. He was a member of Tyger River Presbyterian Church. He is survived by one sister, Gladys S. Dodson of Halifax County, VA; a number of nieces and nephews; and loyal friends, Harris and Betty Thompson of Moore, and Dorothy Thornton of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by brothers, John B., Charles M., and Robert W. Stevens; and sisters, Hilda S. Power and Mary S. Barnes. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2009, at Tyger River Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Douglas D. Cushing.
