A. Frank Weir, Jr., MD, 81, of Spartanburg, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, August 13, 2009. He was born June 7, 1928, in Gastonia, NC, to the late A. Frank Weir, Sr. and Ethel Hord Weir. Leaving to celebrate his life are his wife of 59 years, Janet R. Weir, five children, eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his sister, Jess Jane Cook of Clover, SC, and her family, as well as an extensive network of friends in both the medical and contract bridge players community. His children are David F. Weir, MD and his wife Kathy, Janet W. Shaw and her husband James, Richard M. Weir, MD and his wife Lisa Weir, DDS, all of Spartanburg, Paul D. Weir, MD and his wife Chiqui of Agoura Hill, CA, and Sandra W. Williams and her husband Donald of Duncan. His grandchildren are David Weir, Jr. of Greenville, NC, Chris Weir of Winston Salem, NC, Stephen Shaw and his wife Kim Shaw, MD of Greensboro, NC, Sara Nicholas, MD and her husband Pete of St. Louis, MO, Anna Shaw of Princeton, NJ, Forest, William, and Annelise Weir of Spartanburg, Christina and Eric Weir of Agoura Hills, CA, Lois Boswell of Duncan; and great-grandson, Jackson Shaw of Greensboro, NC. He is also survived by several in-laws, Forest C. Roberts, Jr. and his wife Diane of Lake Wylie, SC, and Aileen Roberts of Gastonia, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, John Ross Roberts, II. Dr. Weir graduated from Wake Forest College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He did general practice in Cliffside, NC, for two years. Frank then served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone during the Korean Conflict. He completed his residency in Ear Nose and Throat from Bowman Gray and practiced medicine, specializing in ENT in Spartanburg from 1961 until 1991 when he retired. He was board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, having maintained this certification throughout his career. During his 30 years of practice in Spartanburg, he served as Chief of Staff of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, president of the Spartanburg County Medical Society, and president of the North and South Carolina Society of Otolaryngology. Frank was a certified bridge director and instructor and past president of unit 170 of the American Contract Bridge League. He and his wife have been avid bridge players for many years, having taught classes locally as well as aboard cruise ships. They began the Kings and Queens Bridge Club in Spartanburg and have continued to operate it for many years. He served as President of the Summer House Homeowners Association for 14 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a former member and deacon of Fernwood Baptist Church. Visitation will be 6:30-8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. David A. Renwick. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. His grandsons, Stephen F. Shaw, David F. Weir, Jr., Christopher J. Weir, Forest W. Weir, William H. Weir, and Eric A. Weir, will serve as Pallbearers.
