William Mcwhorter, Sr.

William Wesley "Bill" McWhorter, P. E., 92, of Summerville and formerly of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at The Village at Summerville. Born December 28, 1924, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late John Clifton McWhorter and Ava Barfield McWhorter and husband of the late Hilda King McWhorter. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A 1948 graduate of Clemson University, a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and professional engineer, Mr. McWhorter retired from Lockwood-Greene Electrical Construction and Maintenance of Spartanburg after 34 years of service as a structural engineer. He was a member and former Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg where he was active for many years. He also served as a volunteer with Mobile Meals in Spartanburg. Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" McWhorter of Hollywood, SC; son, William Wesley "Will" McWhorter, Jr. of Spartanburg, SC; and a large number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, April 14, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Bob Pettit. Burial, with military rites by the U. S. Navy Honors Team, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
