David Coker Sr.

David Gwinn Coker Sr., 85, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, May 17, 2018, at his home. Born October 5, 1932, in Woodruff, SC, he was the son of the late Samuel Hughes Coker and Lois Gwinn Coker and husband of the late Blanche Elizabeth Newman Coker and Elizabeth Whittaker Coker. A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Coker received his BA Degree from the University of South Carolina. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and retired as Comptroller from Arkwright Mills after 30 years of service. He was also a member of IMA (International Management Accountants) and First Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was a Deacon, former Sunday School teacher, and former chairman of the Finance Committee. Survivors include his daughters, Jane C. Sleigher (Joseph) of Spartanburg, SC and Annette C. Miles (Mitch) of Woodruff, SC; son, David G. Coker, Jr. of the home; grandchildren, Melissa, Ben, Josh and Mitch; and great-grandson, Charlie. In addition to his parents and wives, he was predeceased by two brothers, Sam and Homer. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 20, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, by The Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and The Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial, with military rites, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
